Presidents Project: Home

A guide for students to research and present information about the legacy of a U.S. President for 8th grade Civics class.

U.S. PRESIDENTS PROJECT

Presidents impact the eras they govern in. Each of their decisions both at home in the United States (Domestic Affairs) and away in other countries (Foreign Affairs) impact the wider world. All presidents face challenges and successes in their domestic and foreign affairs. By researching these successes and failures, you can begin to get a sense of how past leaders’ actions have an impact on our country today.

Project instructions and info

YOUR TASK:

You are a historian and you work at a presidential library. You need to design a clear, organized Google Site for student visitors to explore, where you showcase your president’s triumphs and outline the greatest challenges of their presidency.

AS YOU RESEARCH:

You will work to analyze and clearly explain the influence of a president on the US and the world.  To do so, each of you will research the president’s response to a significant decision in Domestic Affairs (issues in the United States) and one in Foreign Affairs (issues involving other countries).

Using Google Sites

For a refresher on how to use the tools in Google Sites to add content to your pages, check out this video tutorial.  If you didn't have the web building class last year and need extra help on layout, ask Ms. Guerin or make an appointment to visit during your academic crew day.

Using Google Citations

If you use a source (video, article, etc.) that is from a website rather than a database, you may need to create your own citation.  Reference the handout below for a reminder of how to use Google Citations.

Research Resources

To meet proficiency in your research skill, use information from 3 of the research sources in this column.  If you'd like to add more in-depth research and multimedia to your website, follow up by exploring the "Additional Resources" box.  Remember to check the credibility of any source, and always provide a citation.

The Miller Center at UVA provides reliable facts, essays, and information about all U.S. Presidents.

Search Britannica for basic information about your president, or for any of the places, people, or key events associated with them.

The Gale Biography database will give you info about your president's life and time in office.

The National Archives and Records Administration of the U.S. collects important documents and files related to the country's history.  Through the NARA website, you can link to the Presidential Library of any president for whom one has been created.
